We wanted to answer a few questions about rugged smartphone batteries that we’ve been getting a lot recently. I think it’s down to the fact that the Raptor R5 has an incredible 6000mAh ( that’s huge to you and me!) sized battery. Because of the size, it’s raised a few questions about charging, usage and more so we thought it was best to round all the questions up into a nice post.

What does mAh mean on a rugged smartphone battery?
mAh means “milli-Amp hours.” It’s how you measure the capacity of a battery, measured in the number of amps it can deliver over a number of hours. So a 1000 mAh battery will deliver 1000mA or 1A of power for 1 hour. A 6000mAh battery will deliver 1A for 6 hours or 2A for 3 hours.
How long does it take to charge a battery?
It’s quite easy to work that out. Look at the charger you are using and see what the output Ampage is. Simply divide the size of ypur rugged smartphone battery in mAh by this output Ampage in mA and you will get the number of hours you will need for a full charge from empty.
So, a 5V, 0.3A charger (which are common on Ebay) will take 6000 / 300 = 20 Hours.
A 5v, 2.1A charger that we bundle in the box with our Raptor R5’s will charge the 3600mAh battery in 3600/2100 = 1.7 hours.
Is it me or when I use a vehicle charger, my Raptor battery just seems to last that little bit less?
It’s not you, it’s the dirty current that a vehicle tends to deliver. Even a good quality vehicle charger will struggle to iron out the irregular flow of current getting to the device and it’s this that can sometimes mean that your rugged smartphone battery doesn’t quite get a lovely smooth charge. It doesn’t damage the rugged smartphone battery in the short term, but extended vehicle charging can reduce the life of your batteries a little bit.
So I get how long it takes to charge a battery now, however how quickly will it drain?
Sorry to cop out on this but that simply depends on how much you have going on with your device. If it’s in airplane mode, you have the screen brightness right down and you’re not using it much, then it could last for days, if not weeks. If using sat nav with 3G, GPS and the screen is on 100% brightness, then a 3600mAh battery can be depleted in a few hours.
How do I save my battery if it’s getting too low?
The best way to do this is by using our very own battery manager app. It can be set to automatically switch power guzzling features of your smartphone off at certain battery levels and it works on any Android device. If you want to do this yourself then you can use the energy-saving features of the Android device, or switching your radios off (Phone/3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC) or your screen will be the best way to conserve power.
Do cheap chargers give your device a poorer charge?
Yes, they do. For the same reasons as stated above, they will give your device a dirtier current which will charge your device up slower, more poorly and it will affect the life of your rugged smartphone battery too.
How do I know if I’ll need the 3600 or 6000mah battery?
With the Raptor R5, you don’t need to worry too much. They both work with the same device and they aren’t expensive. However, if you truly need an 8-hour shift out of your rugged smartphone device, then a 3600mAh battery is touch and go, a 6000mAh takes the issue away.
Is it better to give my employees chargers or is it better to give them a bigger battery?
It’s actually better to give them the bigger battery, as long as they are OK with the slight increase in size and weight. The main reason is that you will charge a bigger battery less often and so it will not only last longer day-to-day but it will have a longer overall life too, as you are going through fewer charge cycles. We would always recommend getting as big-a-battery as you can, as it pays off in the end.
